Apple plants
Starkrimson Amerikanka apple plants One-year-old plants are 1.5–1.8 m tall; fruit weighs 160–180 g. This American variety arose in 1921 as a chance bud mutation of Starking Delicious. Formerly grown commercially in the North Caucasus, it remains popular in private orchards. Winter hardiness and powdery mildew resistance are moderate. Scab resistance is below average; the source recommends Bordeaux mixture before flowering. On semi-dwarf MM106 rootstock, mature height is 3.5–5 m. Trees are undemanding about soil and productive from a young age. The spur-type crown has branches at acute angles and suits intensive planting. Mature-tree yield is 100–150 kg. Appearance is rated 4.8/5 and flavour 4.6–4.7/5. Fruiting begins in years 2–3, with no alternate bearing stated. Apples are elongated-conical, ribbed and deep crimson. The source explains the name using 'star' and 'crimson'. Skin is firm, thick and waxy, with pink dots. Cream-coloured flesh is juicy, firm and crisp, with a balanced sweet-tart flavour and pronounced aroma. Harvest is in late September–early October, depending on climate. Fruit keeps for about 7 months in a cellar or refrigerator and is mainly eaten fresh. Please contact Trees Vitas to confirm delivery terms.
