Apple plants
Pinova Evelina apple plants German-bred Pinova is called a '21st-century variety' by European growers for its early bearing, productivity and disease resistance. A moderately vigorous tree with a broad-pyramidal, moderately dense crown, it crops generously every year. First crops appear in year two; yields may reach 30–33 kg per tree by year three. Winter-hardy, highly resistant to powdery mildew and scab, and moderately susceptible to fire blight. Fruit is round-conical, generally symmetrical, tapering towards the base and slightly ribbed. Average weight is given as 170–190 g; another passage gives 170–200 g, with 250–300 g possible in favourable years with good care. Firm green or light green skin is usually matt. At maturity, a diffuse striped coral or carmine-red blush covers more than half the surface, sometimes 75–90%. Small pale subcutaneous dots are faint. Yellow flesh is juicy, firm, crisp, flavourful and aromatic. Fruit keeps its juiciness for 8–9 months in cool storage. Composition per 100 g: catechins 289 mg; vitamin C 20.5 mg; sugars 13.9%; titratable acids 0.37%; pectins 15.3%.
