It is grafted onto wild pear or quince rootstocks. Wild pear is a vigorous rootstock. Trees are undemanding about soil and winter-hardy, begin fruiting 5–8 years after planting, and are productive and long-lived, with 35–40 years of active cropping. The original description states that support and irrigation are unnecessary. Quince is a moderately vigorous rootstock, also described as undemanding about soil, irrigation and support, with moderate winter hardiness. Fruiting begins after 4–5 years, and fruit is larger and sweeter. Advantages include storage for about 6 months in a refrigerator, regular cropping, and frost and disease resistance. The source also gives approximately 6 years to first fruit on pear rootstock and 4 years on quince. The distinctive sweet-tart flavour has a slightly astringent note and a tasting score of 4/5. Fruit is elongated and pear-shaped, golden yellow with a diffuse coral blush that becomes stronger with sun exposure. The skin is thick and firm; flesh is creamy, firm, crisp and coarse-grained. Harvest is from late September to early October, depending on climate; eating maturity is reached in November. Storage in a cellar or refrigerator is about 6 months.
