It helps where moisture is deficient before winter, particularly for new and evergreen plants while soil still absorbs water. Do not add water by the calendar to an already wet or flooded site. Assess moisture and drainage. The aim is suitable root conditions before freezing, not the maximum quantity of water.

One date does not suit every crop and region. Consider hardiness, root type, soil temperature and the forecast for lasting cold. If time is short for the chosen crop, discuss suitable storage until spring. A container does not make every late planting safe, and being able to dig a hole does not prove the plant will establish in time.

Healthy material can be used selectively if it does not form a dense wet layer at shoot bases. Separate leaves with clear disease symptoms and dispose of them appropriately for the problem. Remove obstructive accumulations from lawns and paths. Preparing for winter does not require stripping the entire plot bare.
