Steady spring growth may begin before the risk of cold nights has passed. Open flowers, young leaves and tender growth after uncovering are particularly vulnerable. Protection is more useful when you identify sensitive plants and prepare materials in advance rather than assemble a structure after dark.
Follow the forecast for your own site
A city forecast may not accurately describe an exposed slope or hollow. Observe where snow melts later and morning frost occurs more often. These areas need attention first on a clear, cold night.
A dormant tree's winter hardiness and the frost tolerance of its open flowers are different properties. Even a crop that survived winter well may lose some developing fruit in spring cold. Protecting flowering fruit plants — RHS.
Choose plants you can realistically cover
A small sapling, container or compact shrub is easier to protect than a mature tree. Prepare a light frame and breathable material for low plants. Protection must not break flowers, pull branches together or rest solely on tender shoot tips.
Secure edges against wind. During the day, check the temperature beneath the cover and restore access for light and pollinators when weather permits. A domestic cover on a large tree cannot guarantee the whole harvest; suitable site and cultivar selection at the planning stage are more useful.
Avoid adding extra stress
Move portable containers temporarily to a brighter, more sheltered location. Do not leave them for days in a dark, hot room. Avoid heavy pruning or trying to accelerate growth with fertiliser just before a cold night.
Do not use open fires or smoke as a universal home protection method. Frost-protection sprinkling requires calculations, continuous water supply and monitoring: a brief, improvised spray of the crown is no substitute.
Inspect the effects without immediate trimming
After a cold night, let the plant thaw and wait until damage becomes distinguishable. A blackened flower is not the same as a dead branch. Photograph changes, assess new buds and continue normal, careful care.
Later, remove confirmed dead wood following the crop's pruning rules. If flowering suffered, do not promise that fertiliser will restore the lost fruit set. Record the date, temperature from the nearest observation and flowering stage: these notes will help you prepare better next spring.
