Western arborvitae 'Smaragd' plants This tall cypress-family cultivar is valued for its regular conical shape, rich emerald foliage and easy care. It retains its green colour even in severe cold. Lifespan is 100–150 years depending on conditions, and it looks tidy with little intervention. Available plant heights: 50–250 cm. Prefers sun, warmth, clean air and shelter from wind. A southern position protected from north winds by buildings or tall hedges is suitable; partial shade is acceptable. It may survive extreme conditions but develop poorly. Soil should be loose, well-drained and contain sufficient sand. A 15–20 cm layer of gravel or expanded clay is recommended, especially in heavy clay. Liming is suggested. The original planting instructions recommend a few centimetres of wood ash at the bottom and placing the plant on a mound so roots do not touch the base; after settling, the root collar should remain visible and is stated not to be buried beyond half its length. The hole should be considerably larger than the root ball: 1 m in diameter and depth, or 70 cm in light soils. The soil mixture is turf soil and peat at 2:1. Remove the pot or wrapping only immediately before planting because exposed roots dry quickly. Spring is preferred. The original text warns against autumn planting of Golden Smaragd and suggests thick mulch and a light-transmitting shelter if autumn planting is undertaken. Mineral feeding is recommended 3–4 times annually for young and mature plants. Drought is poorly tolerated. Water weekly in dry soil without rain. Where groundwater sufficiently moistens the root zone, the source suggests no more than twice monthly. It recommends gradually reducing water in autumn and stopping during rain. Before cold weather, mineral fertiliser and mulch are suggested; plants up to two years old may be covered with light fabric. Preserve the root ball when transplanting. Roots lie close to the surface, so loosening should not exceed 10 cm. Peat mulch reduces summer evaporation and protects roots from winter freezing.

Western arborvitae 'Smaragd' Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd' is a conifer with a narrow conical, dense, compact and symmetrical crown. Height reaches 5 m and crown diameter 1.8 m. Evergreen scale-like foliage is glossy and dark emerald green. Rounded brown cones measure 0.7 cm. Slow-growing, adding 10 cm in height and 5 cm in width annually. Long-lived and easy to care for, it adapts to different climates, urban conditions and relatively poor soil. Suitable for specimen and group planting, hedges and containers. Choose a sheltered sunny site; growth and appearance are poorer in shade. If groundwater is high, provide 10–20 cm of gravel drainage. Winter hardiness is high, USDA zone 3. Strong spring sun can scorch foliage in some years, but recovery is quick in spring and summer. Shake off wet snow after snowfalls to protect the crown. Light soil is suitable; provide at least 15 cm of drainage in heavy soil. Prepare a hole matched to the root ball, 60–80 cm deep. Suggested mix: sand, peat and leaf or turf soil at 1:1:2, pH 4.5–6. The original instructions recommend up to 100 g of nitroammophoska per mature plant. Keep the root collar at ground level. After planting, one bucket of water per mature plant weekly is suggested, more often in hot dry weather. It responds well to overhead watering. Spring compound fertiliser is specified at 50–60 g/m². Because roots are shallow, loosen no deeper than 10 cm and mulch with compost, peat or bark. Protect young plants from spring sunscald. Tie the crown with tape in winter to prevent wet-snow damage and remove dry damaged shoots during spring sanitary pruning.
