Description of an early-summer, traditionally selected Baltic apple. The original text also names Suislepskoye. A medium-sized tree with a dense spherical crown and dark, upward-growing branches. Fruit is borne on spurs, short shoots and fruiting twigs. Shoots are thick, reddish-brown and moderately hairy. Medium or large leaves are broad, almost rounded, strongly curved, dark green, glossy, slightly wrinkled, serrate-crenate and moderately hairy. Large teeth point outwards; leaves are firmly attached to short petioles. Fruit is medium to above average in size, usually flattened with a conical upper part, sometimes asymmetrical, with distinct ribs. Greenish or straw-yellow ground colour becomes glossy at maturity, with a pink blush overlaid by bright red stripes. Greenish subcutaneous dots are distinct, and skin is smooth. Stalks are medium to long and laterally flattened. The eye basin is narrow and shallow; the funnel is moderately deep, often with radiating pale brown russeting. The core is very large and broad-onion-shaped, with large open seed chambers. Seeds are medium-sized, flat and dark brown. Flesh is white, often pink beneath the skin and veined pink inside, with a sweet-tart dessert flavour. Composition: sugars 9.8%; titratable acids 0.70%; ascorbic acid 9.2 mg/100 g; P-active compounds 116.0 mg/100 g; pectins 12.2%. Ripens in the first ten days of August in the Oryol Region and keeps about two weeks. Fruiting starts after 6–8 years, with low productivity. Young trees crop annually; mature trees show slight alternate bearing. Winter hardiness is close to Pepin Shafrannyy but below Antonovka, Autumn Striped and Wealthy. Advantages are attractive fruit and dessert flavour; drawbacks are low yield, insufficient winter hardiness and poor transportability.
Consider ripening time, mature tree size and compatible pollination partners. Ask about the rootstock, seedling age and care requirements before choosing a variety.
Ask about availability and choosing plantsKitayka apple plants Small-fruited ornamental apples, often called paradise apples or crabapples, are valued for bright pink or crimson flowers, colourful foliage and vivid fruit from midsummer into winter. Crown shapes may be weeping, compact, spreading or columnar. Kitayka is not one cultivar but a diverse group associated with plum-leaved apple. Shared qualities include frost hardiness, easy care, disease resistance and high productivity. Fruit is suitable for homemade preserves. The trees attract pollinating insects and help pollinate large-fruited apple varieties. They are also used as rootstocks, passing some hardiness and adaptability to the grafted cultivar. Zolotaya Rannyaya was selected by Michurin. Its golden apples weigh 40 g and grow at the tips of branches on a small tree. Heavy crops can break branches; fruit keeps only a few days after picking. Canadian Kerr remains small even without pruning. Burgundy-coloured fruit has a sweet-tart taste with slight astringency and an aroma comparable to Antonovka. Attractive fruit clusters are used in Canada to decorate Christmas trees and stuff festive goose. Michurin's Bellefleur-Kitayka has contributed to more than ten varieties. Unlike other Kitayka types, fruit is large, 120–300 g, pale yellow with a bright blush. Flesh is white, tender, spicy and strongly aromatic. Drawbacks include vigorous growth, scab susceptibility and late bearing. Exhibition fruit has been grown to 500 g. Kerr and Bellefleur-Kitayka are popular in temperate regions.
Zailiyskoye August apple: a reliable late-summer crop in Almaty Trees Vitas offers Zailiyskoye August plants bred for southern Kazakhstan and adapted to local conditions. This medium-early variety suits private gardens and commercial orchards, with high, stable annual yields. Ripens in late August–early September. Medium to large rounded fruit has smooth pale green skin and a slight blush. White flesh is firm, juicy and sweet-tart, with a pronounced apple aroma. Good tolerance of drought, scab and temperature fluctuations. Choose a well-lit site with fertile, well-drained soil. Prepare a planting hole 60–70 cm deep with humus and mineral fertiliser. Water during drought, prune and train the crown in spring, feed during active growth and fruit formation, and protect against pests when needed. Fruit suits fresh eating, juice, compote, preserves, jam and apple puree. It keeps for up to two months in cool conditions. Slava Pobeditelyam apple plants This familiar variety was bred in 1928 at the Mliyev research station near Cherkasy, Ukraine, from Papirovka × McIntosh. Registered as Slava Peremozhtsam, it was widely regionalised across the Soviet Union in the second half of the twentieth century and later used in dessert-apple breeding. Fruit is medium-sized, becoming larger in favourable conditions, and weighs 120–180 g. Usually rounded, it may be slightly conical, elongated or have one rib. Yellow-green skin has a bright red blush, a waxy bloom and distinct subcutaneous dots with corky centres. White-cream flesh is juicy, tender, sweet-tart and strongly aromatic. Suitable for fresh eating, juice, compote, preserves and drying. Yield reaches 75 kg per tree or 110–200 centners per hectare. Ripening ranges from early August in the south to late September in the north; it is generally treated as an autumn variety. Pick before full ripeness: fruit left too long develops brown flesh around the seed chambers and can drop in strong wind. Windfalls store poorly. Fruit can finish ripening in storage at about 5°C. In cellar baskets or boxes, southern-grown fruit keeps about one month and northern-grown fruit up to three months. Choose a healthy, strong plant about human height with branched roots, a clean dry graft union and evenly spaced branches. Prepare a roomy hole about 70 cm × 1 m. Remove infertile soil and mix topsoil with fertiliser, humus and loosening material if needed. Spread roots over a soil cone, backfill and water generously in several stages. Keep the graft union above ground, including after settling. First crops arrive after 4–5 years. Young trees crop regularly; bearing becomes periodic with age, though good care reduces the effect. Grass cover in the orchard benefits fruit size and quality.

Paradise crabapple plants Small-fruited ornamental apple trees are valued for their long season of interest. Bright pink or crimson flowers give way to colourful foliage, followed by vivid apples from midsummer into winter. Crown forms may be weeping, compact, spreading or columnar. The fruit is described as containing pectin, fibre, antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins and 28 trace elements, including zinc, nickel, copper, manganese, iron and cobalt. The source claims ten times more biologically active substances than large-fruited varieties. The original description makes medical claims involving blood pressure, cholesterol, cardiovascular, kidney, liver, skin and bowel conditions, and cancer prevention. These claims should not be treated as verified therapeutic properties of this product; it is offered as an ornamental fruit tree.

Pinova apple plants Bred in Germany in 1986 from Clivia × Golden Delicious. The tree has moderate vigour and a broad-pyramidal, moderately dense crown. Fairly frost-hardy, highly resistant to scab and powdery mildew, and moderately susceptible to fire blight (Faby R., 1994). Flowering is medium-late; the variety is diploid. Pollinators include Elstar, Gala, Gloster, Golden Delicious, Idared, Melrose and Champion. Heavy annual cropping begins in the second year. It tends to set too much fruit and become overloaded. Fruit thinning and summer pruning improve size and colour. Uniform, above-average-sized fruit is round-conical with a narrow apex. A diffuse orange-red striped blush covers 60–70% of the green-yellow surface. Skin is thin but firm, smooth and glossy. Yellow flesh is very firm, crisp, juicy and aromatic, with an excellent sweet-tart flavour. Harvest is in late September–early October. Ripe fruit does not drop, but careless picking can leave finger bruises. It keeps for about 8 months in a refrigerator without physiological disorders, retaining juice and texture and shrivelling less than Golden Delicious. European growers call it a '21st-century variety' for early bearing, disease resistance and yield. Belgian trials (Visitor—Guide-Book, 1999) highlighted its early productivity among 31 new cultivars. On M.9 at 3.5 × 1.5 m spacing, trees in years 2–4 produced 32.2 kg per tree with average fruit weight of 172 g, compared with 20.2 kg for Ariva and 12.9 kg for Santana.
